Is The Universe Infinite or Finite?
In this video, I discuss how Einstein’s Special Theory of Relativity implies that the universe is finite instead of infinite by considering the universe from a photon’s point-of-view. The theory states that as objects increase their velocity, relative to an observer, he or she will measure its length to be less and it’s time to be slower. At the speed of light, 300,000,000 m/s, length shrinks to zero and time stops! So if a photon considers itself to be at rest and that it is the universe that is moving, instead, since motion is relative, then the photon should observe the universe to have zero length and all the motion within the universe to be frozen in time. The idea that the universe could have zero length implies that the universe is finite instead of infinite. However, I believe the universe is infinite (for a variety of reasons I will write about and discuss more in later videos) so there must be a flaw somewhere–maybe in me. 🙂
Don’t hesitate to let me know whether you believe the universe is infinite or finite and why–if you have a strong opinion on the subject.
